MINI-GROUPS

Applique Group
The applique group meets the first Monday of each month starting at 6:00 pm at Pat Catan's in Monroeville. We will be planning our year of fun events in September, and jumping in with activities and tutorials in October! Guild members of all skill levels are welcome. We hope you can join us! Click here for directions.
Mod Squad
Mod Squad is a subgroup of QCE interested in furthering and sharing their development of modern quilting design and sewing skills. We meet on the second Saturday of each month on the lower floor of the Monroeville Library from 1-4pm. Current members of the group have assembled a series of presentations for each month. Those labeled “Workshop” (below) will involve actual sewing and you will be encouraged to bring your fabrics, machine, and tools. Other months will involve demonstrations and instruction. Our meetings always involve a show-and-tell, sharing of interests, problem-solving and are often loosely structured. There is no obligation to participate in any of the projects and some Mod Squad quilters may simply wish to bring and work on their own projects. For schedule for this year, see the newsletter.
We will not be sending monthly emails about Mod Squad to the entire guild. If you wish to be informed, check the newsletter the month before a scheduled meeting, hold onto this schedule Click here for directions.
What is Modern?
We don’t have rules but here are some general thoughts:
What Do We Do?
Logistics
We meet the second Saturday of each month in the lower level of the Monroeville Public Library, 1:00-4:00 pm. Click here for directions.
Creative Quilters
Participants in the “Creative Quilters” group, a sub-group of Quilt Company East Quilt Guild, join together to explore techniques, materials and other aspects of non-traditional or art quilting. Our meetings are mostly unstructured where members share recent works, various techniques, and resources. We have regular challenges and some meetings include structured lessons or sessions to work on joint projects. We’ve had lessons on dye techniques, portrait quilts and fabric post cards. Mostly, we just like to get together and have fun with sewing and quilting and fabric!
The Creative Quilters group usually meets the last Wednesday of each month at The New Covenant Church, 2500 Grandview Ave., Monroeville, Pa. 15146 from 10:00 am-2:00 pm. Some dates may change so please check the newsletter. Click here for directions
We encourage all guild members to come and share ideas with us! See what fun you can have with some different approaches to quilting and sewing.
Community Quilts
The goal of community quilts is to put “community” back into quilting by working as a group to build a quilt. We explore different blocks and work to find pleasing arrangements. As with any group of quilters, there is plenty to learn from each other and lots of laughter. We meet the second Saturday of the month at the back of the Monroeville Library. All levels of proficiency are welcome. We intend to continue to meet over the summer. We meet from 9 AM to 12 PM. Kits of donated scraps are available if you would like to make a quilt at home. Pick these up at any meeting. Click here for directions.
Machine Embroidery
The Embroidery group is to keep track of members that own embroidery machines and to share information. The leader will send out information on classes, new techniques, software and others of interest. There will be no formal meetings. Communication will be online among members of the group. Everyone is encouraged to contribute ideas. Everyone that signs up will receive a list that includes member’s names, phone numbers and types of machines they own.

What is Modern?
We don’t have rules but here are some general thoughts:
- Contemporary fabrics in a traditional pattern
- Focus on solids
- Use of certain “in” colors (e.g., turquoise, orange or grey pallets)
- Avoidance of symmetry
- Improvisational piecing
- Minimalist
- Graphic
- Use of negative space
What Do We Do?
- We love to do show-and-tell with finished works as well as works-in-progress.
- We consult with other members of the group when we run into problems.
- We occasionally build a small group quilt.
- We share new ideas, techniques, and gadget discoveries.
- We teach techniques or demonstrate new designs for one another.
